About
About Route Edition
An independent European travel publication, built around decisions rather than lists.
What this is
Route Edition is an independent travel publication covering Europe. Most travel writing answers the wrong question first — it tells you what exists before it tells you what to do about it. This publication is built the other way round: around the decisions that actually shape a trip. Where to go, how long to give it, where to base yourself, and what each choice costs you.
That means being selective. A page here recommends fewer things than a comparable list would, states the trade-off attached to each one, and is willing to say that a popular option is a poor use of your time. A guide that rates everything highly has told you nothing.
Where we cover
Italy is the current edition. Rather than publish thin coverage of twenty countries, Route Edition covers one properly before starting the next — so the Italy pages are being built out in depth first.
Greece, Spain, Portugal and France follow. The scope is European, and the structure of the publication was designed for that from the start; Italy is the first edition, not the subject.
How the recommendations are made
Recommendations are researched before they are made. Operational facts — opening patterns, booking requirements, transport, seasonal access — come from official and primary sources wherever they exist, and are framed so they stay true rather than pinned to a figure that will be wrong next season.
Search demand decides what gets investigated. It does not decide what gets recommended. Those are different questions, and confusing them is how a publication turns into a content farm while believing it is being data-driven.
Commercial relationships do not determine editorial verdicts. Where a page carries an affiliate link, the recommendation was made first and the link second — and several pages here argue against options that would be straightforward to monetise. The affiliate disclosure sets out how that works, and the editorial policy sets out the standards behind it.
What we do not claim
Route Edition does not claim to have personally visited every place it writes about, and you will not find invented first-person experience here — no manufactured hotel stays, no meals we did not eat, no tours we did not take. Where genuine first-hand material exists it is used and identified as such. Where it does not, the writing is grounded in evidence instead, which is perfectly capable of being useful without pretending.
Photographs record the places they actually show. A picture of one destination is never presented as another, and generated imagery is never published as documentary destination photography.
