Editorial Policy

The standards these pages are held to, written down so they can be checked.

The test every page has to pass

Two questions, applied to every recommendation:

Could we name the source for every factual claim here? And would we still recommend this if it paid nothing?

If either answer is no, the page is not finished. Everything below is what it takes to answer yes.

Sourcing

Operational facts come from primary sources wherever they exist, in roughly this order: official transport operators; official attractions, museums and archaeological parks; government and municipal sources; official tourism bodies; and commercial operators for their own service only.

Other travel publications are useful for orientation — for knowing what a competent guide covers — but they are never the authority for an operational fact. Forums and community posts are genuinely valuable for lived friction: queues, crowd patterns, confusing entry procedures, where people lose time. They are never the source for opening hours, prices, legal requirements or schedules. We use them to learn what to verify, then verify it.

Where a claim cannot be verified, there are three options: mark it pending, omit it, or go and research it. Guessing is not one of them, and neither is hedging a guess to make it sound safer.

Perishable facts

Travel information decays. We prefer durable statements to precise ones that will be wrong next season — an exact figure that is out of date is worse than a general statement that stays true, because the exact figure is the one a reader plans around.

Time-sensitive claims are checked close to publication and framed so a reader knows to confirm them. Where something is unusually volatile — a recent reopening, a suspended service — the page says so directly.

Editorial independence

Commercial relationships do not decide what Route Edition recommends. The sequence is: work out what is useful, work out what we recommend, then ask whether a commercial product helps — never the reverse.

Nothing here is paid placement. No destination, hotel, tour or operator can buy a recommendation, a position or a favourable verdict, and no sponsored content is published as editorial judgment. Pages routinely recommend doing something independently, and routinely advise against options that would be easy to monetise. The affiliate disclosure covers the commercial arrangements that do exist.

Search demand determines what we investigate. It does not determine what we recommend.

Originality

Pages are written from research notes, not from other people’s articles. We do not rewrite competitors, paraphrase a source section by section, or borrow rankings, tables, metaphors or editorial verdicts. Facts belong to nobody; the sentence someone wrote about a fact belongs to them.

First-hand experience

Route Edition does not invent experience. No manufactured visits, stays, meals or tours; no fabricated interviews, quotes or credentials; no invented testing. Where genuine first-hand material exists it is used and identified. Where it does not, the writing is grounded in evidence and does not pretend otherwise.

Ratings and review counts are not published, because we do not collect them and displaying numbers we did not produce would be dishonest.

Photography

A photograph records the place it actually shows. An image of one destination is never captioned as another, and where a location cannot be verified from the frame, the caption and alt text do not claim one.

Generated imagery is never published as authentic destination photography.

How AI is used

AI tools assist with research, organisation and production. They do not replace research, judgment or authorship: a draft that compiles is not a draft that publishes.

Full article prose is not written from a model’s general knowledge. Factual claims trace to evidence gathered from the sources described above, and every page is reviewed by a person before it goes live. Responsibility for what is published rests with Route Edition, not with any tool used to produce it.

What we are not

Route Edition is a small independent publication. There is no large editorial staff and no separate fact-checking department, and claiming otherwise would be the first thing on this page to fail its own test. What there is: a defined standard, applied consistently, and a willingness to correct.

Corrections

Errors get fixed. The corrections policy sets out how, and anything wrong can be reported to ibnoucheikhamin@gmail.com.
