Route Edition may earn a commission when you book through some links on this site, at no extra cost to you.

The short version

Some links on Route Edition are affiliate links. If you follow one and book something, Route Edition may receive a commission from the provider. You pay nothing extra — the price is the same as it would be if you had gone to the provider directly.

Affiliate relationships do not determine which destinations, trips or products are recommended, and they never have.

Which programs are active

One, currently: Viator, which sells tours and experiences. Every affiliate link on this site today points to Viator, and all of them sit on a single article.

If that changes — another tour platform, accommodation, rail, insurance or anything else — this page is updated before the links go live, not afterwards. Route Edition does not have relationships with any program not named on this page.

How a recommendation is made

The order is fixed, and it is the whole point:

First, decide what is genuinely useful to a reader. Second, decide what Route Edition actually recommends. Third, ask whether a commercial product helps with that. Only then look for an affiliate link.

Reversing those steps is how travel publishing goes wrong, so several things follow from doing them in order. Pages here recommend independent travel where independent travel is better, and say so plainly. Pages advise against options that would be easy to monetise. Destinations with commercial potential carry no link at all where the editorial verdict is that you should not go. A page that would be better with no commercial module has none.

Not every link is an affiliate link

Most links on this site are not commercial. Links to official sources — transport operators, museums, municipal information — are there because that is where a reader should verify a perishable detail, and Route Edition earns nothing from them. Internal links between our own pages are not commercial either.

Where a link is an affiliate link, the module carrying it is labelled, names the provider, and a disclosure appears above the first one on the page.

Buying from a third party

When you follow an affiliate link you leave Route Edition and complete the purchase with the provider. Route Edition is not the seller — not the tour operator, the hotel, the carrier or the payment processor — and is not party to your booking.

Prices, availability, inclusions, cancellation terms and the provider’s own policies are set by them and can change at any time. Anything material to your booking should be confirmed on their site before you pay. Their terms and privacy policy apply from the moment you arrive.
